Sets Overview

The various stereonet plots in Dips (Vector and Contour) allow you to visually identify clustering of orientation data.

What is a Set?

A Set, as defined in Dips, is a grouping of data created with one of the following options in the Sets menu:

These options allow you to create windows around data clusters on the stereonet and obtain mean orientations of data (poles) within the windows.

Automatic Cluster Analysis can also be performed, which does not rely on explicitly defining window extents and instead uses distance measures to form sets.

Curved Set Window

Curved Set Windows are curvilinear, four-sided windows defined by two trend values and two plunge values, at opposite corners. Windows can wrap around to the opposite side of the stereonet to group data near the perimeter.

Circular Set Window

Circular Set Windows can be drawn to facilitate the selection of Sets near the center of the stereonet. They can optionally be placed with an arbitrary center.

Freehand Set Window

Freehand Set Windows allow you to easily select irregular groupings of poles as a set. Multiple windows can be defined for the same Set, allowing you to enclose complex pole distributions as a single Set.

The mean orientations can be plotted as poles and/or planes on the stereonet, and set statistics (confidence and variability cones) can be plotted.

Set Windows will normally be drawn on Contour Plots of the data, since data clustering is most evident on Contour Plots. However, Set Windows can be drawn on any of the stereonet plots in Dips (Pole, Scatter, Contour, or Major Planes).

  • Sets added to the Stereonet Plot View are not view-specific. These Sets will be applied to the main data and any filtered subset of data (if applicable).
  • Multiple Sets can be added.
  • Set windows can overlap, but a pole can only belong to one set at any given time (the last added set window governs).

Visibility

When a Set Window is added, it appears under the Set Windows group in the Visibility tree.

  • To toggle on/off visibility of all Set Windows, click on the Visibility eye icon beside the group.
  • To toggle on/off visibility of individual Set Windows, click on the Visibility eye icon beside each Set Window.

A corresponding Mean Set Plane also appears under the Mean Set Planes group in the Visibility tree.

  • To toggle on/off visibility of all Mean Set Planes, click on the Visibility eye icon beside the group.
  • To toggle on/off visibility of individual Mean Set Planes, click on the Visibility eye icon beside each Mean Set Plane.

The following options are available in the Set Window Properties pane:

  • Name
  • Color
  • Edit Set

The following options are available in the Mean Set Plane Properties pane:

  • Color
  • Show Plane
  • Show Pole
  • Show Plane Label
  • Show Pole Label
  • Show Daylight Envelope
  • Show Marker Ticks
  • Show Confidence Cones
  • Show Variability Cones

Import and Export Sets

Sets can be imported or exported using the Import and Export buttons in the Visibility tree beside the Set Windows group. Dips Sets files have a .setsdips extension.
