Data Columns
Predefined Columns
There are several predefined columns in Dips with reserved header names, which are required at a minimum to define:
- Orientation
- Quantity
- Weight
- Traverse association
- Set association
- Distance
- Location (X, Y, Z)
- Persistence
ORIENTATION COLUMNS
The orientation columns are always the first two columns in the Pole Data Grid, by default. The orientation convention depends on the Reporting Orientation convention set in Project Settings. In which the headers and values are either:
- Dip/Dip Direction
- Strike(right)/Dip
- Strike(left)/Dip
- Trend/Plunge
QUANTITY COLUMN
The Quantity column represents the number of repeated measurements.
TRAVERSE COLUMN
The Traverse column is automatically created and corresponds to the Orientation Data dataset that the feature was measured on or grouped by.
DISTANCE COLUMN
The Distance column is automatically created and corresponds to the Distance column in the Orientation Data dataset's Discontinuities grid. Distance measurements are only recorded for Linear Scanline, Linear Borehole Televiewer, Linear Borehole Oriented Core, Curved Borehole Televiewer, and Curved Borehole Oriented Core traverse types. For all other types, this column is left blank.
WEIGHT COLUMN
The Weight column is automatically created and corresponds to the weighting computed using Terzaghi Weighting. See the Terzaghi Weighting Options topic for more information.
SET COLUMN
The Set column is automatically added if any Sets are defined (and removed if all Sets are deleted) and corresponds to the Set or Cluster that the feature is associated with.
LOCATION COLUMNS
The location columns represent the UTM coordinates of the discontinuity.
- X (East)
- Y (North)
- Z (Elev.)
For Linear Scanline, Linear Borehole Televiewer, Linear Borehole Oriented Core, Curved Borehole Televiewer, and Curved Borehole Oriented Core traverses, the location is computed automatically by Dips using the Local Coordinates (representing the start of the scanline or the collar of a borehole), the traverse path, and the Distance column.
For Spot Mapping, Planar, and Clinorule traverses, the X, Y, and Z must be explicitly entered.
PERSISTENCE COLUMN
The Persistence column presents the size of the discontinuity (i.e., maximum persistence, radius, or trace length) and can be used to perform statistics analysis or used for filtering by Persistence to obtain subsets of discontinuities representing major and minor features.
EXTRA COLUMNS
Extra columns are user-defined and represent quantitative or qualitative data. They appear to the left of all predefined columns by default.
Extra columns are merged from all Orientation Data dataset Discontinuities grid extra columns. Columns with the same header names are merged as one and there is a strong assumption that columns with the same header name:
- Represent the same data
- Have the same Data Type (i.e., Text, Length, etc.), but can have different units (e.g., Length with mix of m and ft units)
