Linear Scanline
A Linear Scanline Traverse Type can be any type of linear scanline on which planar orientation data is collected along a straight line with constant trend/plunge (e.g., scanline, tunnel wall mapping, or processed borehole).
Data Orientation Convention
The Data Orientation Convention refers to the orientation format of the data collected on a Traverse. For each Linear Scanline Traverse, the orientation format of the data you enter in the first two columns of the Discontinuities grid (in the Orientation Data dialog), must correspond to the Data Orientation Convention selected.
The following Data Orientation Convention are available:
- Dip/Dip Direction
- Strike(Right)/Dip
- Strike(Left)/Dip
- Trend/Plunge
The Data Orientation Convention option allows you to specify the orientation format for individual Traverses. This allows you to combine different data formats within the same DIPS file.
If the Data Orientation Convention is different from the Reporting Orientation (entered in Project Settings), the raw input orientations will be automatically converted to the equivalent Reporting Orientation.
Traverse Format
The Traverse Format refers to the orientation format used to define the orientation of the Traverse itself. For a Linear Scanline Traverse, the Traverse Format is always Trend/Plunge, regardless of the Data Orientation Convention.
A Linear Scanline Traverse can be any straight line along which fracture data has been collected. This includes a borehole. For the purpose of applying Terzaghi Weighting, a borehole can be treated as a Linear Scanline or Linear Borehole Televiewer in DIPS.
The Plunge is measured from the horizontal:
- A vertical hole would have Plunge = 90 degrees
- A horizontal scanline would have Plunge = 0 degrees
If the borehole is curved to some degree, we recommend that you define a Curved Borehole Televiewer (for processed data) or a Curved Borehole Oriented Core traverse instead.
