Reporting Orientation
The Orientation setting is for reporting purposes only, so that input data of mixed orientation conventions (including orientations measured on Oriented Cores) is converted to an equivalent orientation. In Dips, the available Orientation conventions are:
- Dip/Dip Direction - planar feature
- Strike(Right)/Dip - planar feature, right-hand rule for strike
- Strike(Left)/Dip - planar feature, left-hand rule for strike
- Trend/Plunge - linear measurements or for pole vectors of planes
The desired reporting Orientation convention affects how spherical coordinates are displayed in:
- Processed Pole Data Grid
- Edit User Plane dialog
- Edit Set Window dialogs
- Datatips on planar entities
- Tracked mouse coordinates when in Stereonet 2D or Rosette view (as indicated in the bottom-right corner of the status bar)
Right-hand Rule in Dips
For Strike/Dip, the "handedness" (right-hand rule or left-hand rule) can be interpreted as follows: hold the specified hand flat, with the palm down and the thumb extended at 90 degrees to your fingers. When your fingers are pointing down Dip, your thumb indicates the direction of Strike. Strike is always measured from North.
- This corresponds to the American right-hand rule (although the wording is different).
- The British right hand rule corresponds to the Strike/Dip (left hand rule) in Dips.
Status Bar
The reporting Orientation can be toggled in the status bar at the bottom-right of the application (and alternatively in the Analysis > Reporting Convention drop down in the Home ribbon).
