Add Single Bolt

Bolts can be added as individual (single) bolts or bolt patterns to selected faces or edges of external volume pieces.

To add Bolts as individual bolts to a selected face:

  1. Select the Support Support workflow tab workflow tab.
  2. Select Faces Selection Faces Selection icon as the Selection Mode.
  3. Select the face on which to add the bolt(s).
  4. Select Add Bolts Add Bolts icon from the toolbar or the Bolts Bolts icon sub-menu of the Support menu.
  5. TIP: with the face selected, you can also right-click on the viewing screen and select Add Bolts from the Support sub-menu.

  6. You will see the Add Bolts dialog. In this dialog:
    • select the Bolt Property type.
    • select the bolt Orientation (e.g. Normal, Trend & Plunge, or Vector).
    • enter the Length of the bolt.
    • in a multi-stage mode, the Staging options allow you to specify the stage at which the bolt will be installed and the stage at which the bolt will be removed. In addition, it can be selected to automatically remove bolt in excavated material using the available option.
    • select Application = Single Bolt.
    • select the method to use in specifying the Bolt Head Location.

NOTE: the Bolt Head Location must be on the selected geometry (i.e. face or edge).

See below for details about the property, orientation, length, staging, application, and bolt head location.

  1. If Bolt Head Location was selected as X,Y,Z in the previous step, enter the XYZ coordinates of the bolt head and select Add. If Freehand is selected, use the view window and left click on the mouse to place the bolt. With Freehand selected, the left click of the mouse effectively completes the placement and add operation. You may repeat this action for each bolt.
  2. When all bolts have been added to the selected face, select Done to complete and close the dialog.

To apply a single Bolt to an edge repeat the Steps 1 to 7, but use Edges Selection Edges Selection icon to select the edge(s) on which to add the bolt.

Bolt Property

You can select a Bolt Property type in the Add Bolts dialog. If you wish to edit the bolt properties you can use the Edit Bolt Property Edit Bolt Property icon shortcut button beside the bolt property type list.

Bolt Orientation

The Orientation may be specified using one of the following options:

  • Normal - bolts are applied normal to the boundaries
  • Trend/Plunge - specify a trend and plunge
  • Vector (x,y,z) - specify a vector from the x, y, and z-directions

Flip Orientation

NOTE: after adding a bolt, the orientation may sometimes be opposite from the intended direction (i.e. 180 degrees off). If this occurs, you can select the bolt and use the Properties pane option to "flip" (i.e. reverse) the load orientation by 180 degrees.

Bolt Length

The length of all bolts as measured along the axis of the bolt.

Staging

If your model is staged, you can specify the installation and removal stage of bolt.

  • Install at stage - by default the installation stage will be set to the stage that you are currently viewing (i.e. the currently selected stage tab). You can enter a different stage if necessary.
  • Remove at stage - by default the removal stage will be set to never. You can enter the stage at which the bolts are to be removed (uninstalled), if applicable.

AUTO-REMOVE IN EXCAVATED MATERIAL

The bolts can be automatically removed in excavated materials if the Auto-remove in excavated material checkbox is selected.

Bolt Application and Bolt Head Location

In RS3, Bolts can be added as Single Bolt or Bolt Pattern. The Single Bolt option allows the user to select the geometry on which the bolts are to be added and define the Bolt Head Location by one of the following options:

  • X,Y,Z - enter the XYZ coordinates of the bolt head to be added. This option requires the use of the Add Add button button after each bolt head location is entered in order to add the bolt to the model.
  • Freehand - use the view window and left click on the mouse to place the bolt. With this option selected, the left click of the mouse effectively completes the placement and adds the bolt to the model.

NOTE: the Bolt Head Location must be on the selected geometry (i.e. face or edge).
