Support Forces

If your Slide2 model includes support, then the support force diagrams for the support can be displayed with the Support Force Diagram option.

If the support was defined with a pressure profile (i.e. if it is one of Pile/Micro Pile with Ito & Matsui failure mode, Pile/Micro Pile with EFW failure mode, or Retaining Wall (EFP)), then the pressure profile can also be displayed with the Support Pressure Diagram option.

Support in Slide2 can be used to model the effects of soil nails, geotextiles, tiebacks, and other types of slope support systems. See the Define Support section in the Slide2 Model Help system, for complete details.

SHOW SUPPORT FORCES

The Show Support Forces Support Forces Icon option, in the toolbar or the Data menu, works as a toggle, to show or hide the display of the support force diagrams.

  • The support force diagrams represent the available support force which can be mobilized by a support element, at any point along the length of the support.
  • If a slip surface intersects a support element, the magnitude of the support force which is applied to the slip surface is determined by the magnitude of the force diagram, at the point of intersection.
  • When the support force diagrams are displayed, the Legend will indicate the failure mode(s) along the length of the support. Each type of failure mode is displayed using a different colour on the support force diagrams.
  • For a complete description of how the support force diagrams are determined in Slide2, for each type of support, see the Define Support section in the Slide2 Model Help system.
  • When 'Use Shear Capacity' is checked on in the Support Properties dialog, and a Force Orientation other than 'Parallel to Reinforcement' is selected, 'Parallel to Reinforcement' is used for the support force diagram calculation. Since vector addition occurs, the support force diagram for this case will be different from the applied force seen from Show Slices.

    Show Support Pressures

The Show Pressure Diagram option, in the toolbar or the Data menu, works as a toggle, to show or hide the display of the support pressure diagrams.

    • This option is only enabled for support types that have pressure defined, namely Pile/Micro Pile with Ito & Matsui failure mode, Pile/Micro Pile with EFW failure mode, or Retaining Wall (EFP).
    • If a slip surface intersects a support element, the magnitude of the support force which is applied to the slip surface is determined by the integration of the pressure diagram from the top of the support element to the point of intersection with the slip surface.
    • When the pressure diagrams are displayed, the Legend will indicate the colour of the pressure drawing.

      Support Diagram Options

The Support Diagram Options dialog is used to configure the display of support diagrams. The Support Diagram Options is available in the Data menu or the toolbar.

      RIGHT-CLICK SHORTCUT

The Support Diagram display options are also available through a convenient right-click shortcut - if you right-click directly on a support element (e.g. a bolt or a geotextile) the popup menu will provide shortcuts to Show Support Force Diagram, Support Diagram Options, and Show Support Pressure Diagram (when applicable).
