Slice Angles (Sarma)

The primary method of defining slice angles for the Sarma Non-Vertical Slice method is with the Sarma Slice Angle option in Project Settings. This applies to all surfaces generated by the analysis.

In addition, for user-defined non-circular slip surfaces, you can define fixed interslice angles at slip surface vertices with the Define Slice Angles option. This allows you to specify the interslice angle at particular vertices of a slip surface (e.g. to model a known joint location) or to create a fully defined wedge system with fixed interslice wedge angles for all slices of a given surface.

  • If you want to fully define the interslice angles for all wedges, then you will have to adjust the number of vertices on the slip surface and/or the Number of Slices in Project Settings accordingly.
  • Depending on the Number of Slices, Slide2 will automatically generate additional slice boundaries as required, based on the Sarma Slice Angle option selected in Project Settings.
  • To enable the Define Slice Angle option, at least one user-defined non-circular slip surface must be defined.

Define Slice Angles

To define interslice angles for user-defined slip surfaces:

  1. Select Surfaces > Slice Angles (Sarma) > Define Slice Angles.
  2. You will be prompted to select vertices of a user-defined non-circular slip surface.
  3. Use the mouse to select one or more vertices, then press Enter or right-click and select Done Selection from the popup menu.
  4. As you move the cursor the interslice boundary will be displayed as an interactive dotted line and current slice angle for the selected vertex or vertices. You can enter the slice angle graphically by clicking the mouse when the desired angle is achieved. Or you can enter an exact angle value in the prompt line (0 to 360 measured counter-clockwise from the x-axis).
  5. You can repeat steps 3 and 4 as necessary to define the interslice angle for other slip surface vertices. When finished press Enter or Escape to exit the option.

Slice angles defined with the Define Slice Angles option will remain fixed throughout the analysis, regardless of the Sarma Slice Angle option selected in Project Settings.

Define Cohesion & Phi

You can also right-click on the surface and select "Define Cohesion & Phi" to define the data for all vertices in a tabular format.

Remove Slice Angles

To remove interslice angles created with the Define Slice Angles option:

  1. Select Surfaces > Slice Angles (Sarma) > Remove Slice Angles.
  2. You will be prompted to select vertices of a user-defined non-circular slip surface.
  3. Use the mouse to select one or more vertices. Press Enter or right-click and select Done Selection, and the interslice angles will be removed on the selected vertices.

Right-Click Shortcut

The Define Slice Angle and Remove Slice Angle options can also be accessed by a right-click shortcut:

  1. Right-click on an individual vertex of a user-defined non-circular slip surface.
  2. Select Define Slice Angle, Remove Slice Angle, or Define Cohesion & Phi from the popup menu.
