Section Creation

Slide3 allows you to capture any 2D section of a Slide3 model and generate a Slide2 file. All material properties and material assignments will be preserved from the Slide3 model. This tool allows you to easily perform a 2D analysis on any 2D section of a Slide3 model.

  1. Open any Slide3 model.
  2. Select View > Slide2 Section Creator Slide2 Export
  3. Select the icons in the top left corner of the dialog to add either a Single Section (single section icon) or a Multi-Section (multi section icon)
  4. For a single section, you can specify a section plane at any location or angle by entering values for the X and Y coordinates, and the Strike angle.
  5. For the Multi-Section group, you can draw a polyline on the Plan View/Perspective View and select different section creation methods including:
    • As drawn,
    • At each segment midpoint,
    • Spaced along X axis,
    • Spaced along Y axis.
  6. Select OK to accept and close the Slide2 Section Creator. All the sections you defined will be added into the model.

Slide2 Compute

The Slide2 Compute option is an added feature in Slide3. Once Slide2 sections are created in the model, Slide2 Compute option can be used to package sections into a single Slide2 Multi-Group file and the Slide2 compute engine will automatically be invoked to perform a 2D analysis of each section. The results will be read back into Slide3, and the global minimum surfaces and the minimum factors of safety will be displayed on the model in 3D.

  1. Continuing with the last section, there should be some Slide2 sections in the view.
  2. Select: Analysis > Slide2 Compute from the menu or select Slide2 Compute slide2 compute icon from the toolbar.
  3. If the project has not been saved, it will prompt you to save the project first.
  4. Select Sections to Compute dialog will pop up to select sections to compute.
  5. Select OK to start Slide2 compute engine and compute the Slide2 file.
  6. Once Slide2 compute engine has finished, Slide3 will update all the sections with 2D global minimum surfaces. Switch to Results tab to view 2D surfaces.

Refresh Slide2 Results

The computed Slide2 file can be modified and recomputed using Slide2. Once the file has been modified, you can use Refresh Slide2 Results option to reload the 2D global minimum surfaces from Slide2 file and update them in the model.

  1. Once you’ve saved the project, the computed Slide2 file can be found within the 'slide2_compute' folder which is auto-generated when saving the project. I.e. If the Slide3 project name is Project1.slide3m2, then the computed Slide2 file is Project1\slide2_compute\slide2_compute.slmd
  2. You can use Slide2 to open the above Slide2 file, make modifications and recompute using Slide2 Engine. (Warning: modifying the geometry of the model may cause misalignment between the result and the section.)
  3. Go back to Slide3 and select Interpret > Refresh Slide2 Results from the menu or select Refresh Slide2 Results from the toolbar.
  4. 2D global minimum surfaces should be updated from the modified Slide2 file.

Slide2 Export

The Slide2 Export can be used to export sections as Slide2 Multi-Group files. The exported Slide2 file can be opened and further edited within Slide2. The user can compare results to 2D slope stability analysis methods.

Note You can use this tool before computing the results.

After creating the desired sections for analysis:

  1. Select File > Export > Slide2 Export from the menu or select Compute/Export to Slide2 from the toolbar.

    toolbar
  2. Select sections that you would like to export in the Select Sections to Export dialog.
  3. Select a file location to save the Slide2 file using the Select Folder button. The Select Folder button allows you to choose desired file location to save Slide2 files. The default location should be within a folder with the same name as the current Slide3 project (ex. Slide3project/slide2_slide3Project).
  4. Select Open.
  5. If there is more than one Search Limit, then you must select which one to export in the Select Entity dialog.

  6. select entity dialog

  7. The exported Slide2 file will be opened by Slide2 automatically.
If Slide2 is not installed the program will not open.

You can edit anything in Slide2 including slope limits, surface options, etc. There are also buttons added to export dialog to allow users to either compute when Slide2 files are exported or they can open the file right after exporting Slide2 files. If the file gets modified in Slide2, when the results are loaded to Slide3 there will be a modified flag next to the Factor of Safety.

The compute should not be available until one file has been exported. Also, interpret and open computed Slide2 file location are disabled until the results are available.
