Profile Generation
After defining the Mean Profile, the user must proceed to the Profile Generation tab to generate their soil profile(s). Within this tab are several optional randomization features including:
- Thickness randomization control - Toro (1995)
- Velocity randomization control - Toro (1995)
- Dynamic curve randomization control
Tick the checkbox next to the Randomization option to enter the randomization parameters.
If you are not using Randomization, you can simply click Generate profiles to create your soil profile. Sublayers will be generated within the strata, using the process described below.
Layer Subdivision
With the information of the shear wave velocity and thickness of each stratum in the mean profile, an automatic subdivision of the profile can be achieved. That is done by computing the highest frequency that the layer can propagate and is calculated as: fmax = VS/4H, where Vs is the shear wave velocity of the layer, and H is the layer thickness. The stratum is then divided into sublayers of equal thicknesses to achieve a target fmax, specified by the user, or higher. The properties of the sublayers are the same as that of the parent stratum layer. The target fmax is recommended to be equal to 30 Hz or higher.
Multiple Profiles
If you are creating multiple profiles, you will need to select the Dynamic curve randomization option, and specify the number of Random profiles to generate at the bottom left of the screen.
After generating the profiles, use the drop down list on the top right of the screen to review the individual profiles. The preview shown will only display the layer thicknesses. To review the layer properties for a profile, proceed to the Properties tab.
Reset Generated Profiles
If you wish to clear the profile you generated in order to adjust the profile parameters, you can click Reset Generated Profiles.
