Liquefaction Overview

The General tab of the Liquefaction Options dialog is the same for all input data types. The Input Data, Depth Correction, and Advanced tabs change depending on which input is specified in the Liquefaction tab of the Project Settings.

General

In the General tab of the Liquefaction Options dialog, the following data is specified:

  • Max. Earthquake Acceleration (g)
  • Earthquake Magnitude
  • Distance from Fault
  • Slope Angle
  • Probabilistic Methods
  • Cutoff Factor of Safety for Settlement and Lateral Displacement calculations

Probabilistic Methods

The two probabilistic options are to find the probability of liquefaction using a user-defined factor of safety, or to find the factor or safety using a user-defined probability of liquefaction.

Liquefaction Theory

The Liquefaction Theory Manual outlines the methods available in Settle3 and provides the equations used.

Notes on Liquefaction Analysis in Settle3

General

When performing a liquefaction analysis, you must use the appropriate correction factors for the specific analysis method (as outlined in the reference articles), otherwise you will be violating the assumptions of the published works.

Please see the Liquefaction references for more information.

K Alpha

Alpha is defined as the ratio of the initial static shear stress to effective vertical stress by Seed (1983). In Settle3, Kalpha is approximated as the tangent of the slope angle, and the variation with depth is neglected in this simplification.

Groundwater Options

The liquefaction analysis can only be carried out on a model with a single piezo line or groundwater grid defined. You cannot use staged piezo lines for liquefaction analysis, or the pore water pressure groundwater option.
