Elastic Analysis Overview

Failure Modes Considered:

  • Shear (vertical slippage at abutments)
  • Elastic Buckling

Main Assumption

Roof behaves as an elastic fixed beam or plate, with span equal to the shorter of the x and y dimensions.

Applicability

  • Low, medium, or high confining stresses
  • Span / depth ratios < 3 not recommended
NOTE: Elastic Analysis is restricted to Rectangular Pillars only since the plate bending and elastic buckling formulations assume a rectangular geometry.

For reference, see Theory of Plates and Shells (1987, Timoshenko).
