Design Factor of Safety
Design Factor of Safety
The Design Factor of Safety is applicable for Probabilistic Analysis, and is used in the determination of Probability of Failure (i.e., PF = probability of Calculated FS < Design FS) and number of failed pillars. In CPillar, different failure modes are considered depending on the Analysis Method selected. As such, separate Design Factors of Safety can be specified for each applicable failure mode:
- Design Shear Factor of Safety (applicable to Rigid, Elastic and Voussoir Analyses)
- Design Elastic Buckling Factor of Safety (applicable to Elastic Analysis)
- Design Compression Factor of Safety (applicable to Voussoir Analysis)
The default values are set to 1.
NOTE: The Design Factor of Safety does NOT influence the calculation of Factor of Safety, it is only used as a failure threshold for post-processing of probabilistic analysis results.
Design Buckling Parameter
The Design Buckling Parameter is applicable for Probabilistic Analysis, and is used in the statistical charts as the threshold for display of failed pillars in the Show Failed Pillars option. Any pillar with calculated Buckling Parameter > Design Buckling Parameter is considered a failed pillar .
NOTE: The Design Buckling Parameter is not used in the determination of Probability of Failure. For Arch Snap Thru failure mode (applicable to Voussoir Analysis), the Probability of Failure is reported as either Low, Medium, High, or Very High based on the Buckling Parameter ranges.
