Grid Data Import

To import Grid Data using Dips Import Wizard:

  1. Select: File > Import > Import Wizard.
  2. In the Import Data Types page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog:
    1. Select the Grid Data checkbox to import to Grid Data.
    2. If at least one of the Data Types is selected, the Next button will be enabled.
    3. Select Next to proceed to defining the import file and format.
  3. In the Grid Data Import page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog:
    1. Under Import File:
      1. Select the Open file icon button to add an Excel (.xls or .xlsx) file to Import File. You may select one or more files. The Input File Preview will show a preview of the first 100 rows of the selected Import File.
      2. Select the Excel Sheet to read from the Import File.
      3. Set the First Data Row. The First Data Row will be the row where Dips starts reading data from.
    2. To automatically import all columns of Excel data, select Append All Unused Columns as Extra Columns checkbox. This will automatically take any columns of data not assigned in the Data to Columns grid (i.e., From Column = None) and add it as an extra columns in Grid Data (to the right of all predefined columns).
    3. To include the header text with this data, select the Import Headers from Row checkbox and set the header row to read from.
    4. Under Orientation:
      1. Set the Global Orientation Format of all the data in Grid Data. The Global Orientation Format set here will override the Global Orientation Format set in Project Settings.
      2. Set the Declination correction of all the data in Grid Data. The Declination set here will override the Declination set in Project Settings.
    5. Under Columns:
      1. Check the Quantity Column checkbox if you want to include the predefined Quantity column in Grid Data.
      2. Check the Distance Column checkbox if you want to include the predefined Distance column in Grid Data.
      3. Check the X, Y, Z Columns checkbox if you want to include the predefined X, Y, Z columns in Grid Data.
      4. Check the Persistence Column checkbox if you want to include the predefined Persistence column in Grid Data.
      5. The Quantity Column, Distance Column, X, Y, Z Columns, and Persistence Column set here will override the Columns set in Project Settings.
    6. Under Units:
      1. Select the Metric or Imperial radio control to set the Units used for length measurements.
      2. The Units set here will override the Units set in Project Settings.
    7. Under Data to Columns:
      1. Set the From Column to the corresponding Excel column from which Dips will read in the data to populate the Header Data entries.
      2. If Quantity Column is checked, a "Quantity" entry will be added in the Data to Columns grid.
      3. If Distance Column is checked, a "Distance" entry will be added in the Data to Columns grid.
      4. If X, Y, Z Columns is checked, three "X", "Y" and "Z" entries will be added in the Data to Columns grid.
      5. If Persistence Column is checked, a "Persistence" entry will be added in the Data to Columns grid.
      6. If any Traverses are being imported or already exist, a "Traverse" entry will be added. Any extra columns which already exist, will also be automatically added.
      7. If you would like to add additional data as extra columns in Grid Data, you may do so by clicking the Add add icon button. A new entry row will appear in the Data to Columns grid, below the existing entries.
      8. To delete a Data Header, click the Delete delete icon button.
      9. You can rename any newly added Data Header. You cannot rename or delete predefined Dips entry types, or existing columns, which are shaded in grey.
    8. By default, Overwrite Existing Grid Data checkbox is selected, which means that existing row entries in the Grid Data will be replaced by this data upon import. Uncheck Overwrite Existing Grid Data checkbox if you would like to append the data to existing entries in the Grid Data.
    9. If at least one Data Header is being imported, the Import Data Preview will show a preview of the first 100 rows of the selected import data, and the Next button will be enabled.
    10. Select Next to proceed to the Import Summary page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog.
  4. In the Import Summary page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog:
    1. Review the Import Data Type and its Status (Overwrite or Append).
    2. If any errors were detected (see Grid Data Import Rules and Limitations topic for more information), they will be listed under the Warnings box. The Finish button will not be enabled until all errors are resolved.
    3. To save the current settings as a template, select the Save Current Import Settings as a Template checkbox and specify the Template Name. See the Import Settings Template topic for more information.
    4. Go Back to modify any import data.
    5. Click Finish to start importing the data into Dips.

Navigate to the main Grid Data view. You should see that the data was successfully imported from Excel and into the Grid Data table.
