Technical Workshop: Slope Stability Analysis with Limit Equilibrium (Slide2) and Finite Element (RS2)

Following the Indonesia User Group Meet on October 13th, the two-day technical workshop will cover core limit equilibrium and finite element topics in Slide2 and RS2, including groundwater analysis and probabilistic analysis.

Course Outline

Day 1: 

  • Module 1 – Discussion on Fundamentals of Slope Stability Analysis using limit equilibrium and finite element methods
    • Overview of Slope Stability Analysis Methods and Design considerations
    • Overview of Measures of Stability – Factor of Safety using Limit equilibrium analysis, Deformation and Strength Reduction Factor using Finite element analysis
    • Comparison of Deterministic and Probabilistic analysis methods
    • Overview of different analysis methods, search methods and optimization methods in Slide2 and RS2
  • Module 2 – Slope stability modeling with Slide2
    • Slide2 model set up – including soil profiles, importing geometry, geometry clean up, assigning materials properties including weak layers, assigning analysis and search methods
    • Results interpretation
    • Thrust line validation
  • Module 3 – Probabilistic analysis in Slide2
    • Applying sensitivity analysis to determine sensitivity of results to model inputs including water
    • Calculating Probability of Failure and comparing to Factor of Safety
    • Using probabilistic analysis to back calculated material properties of failed slopes 

Day 2: 

  • Module 4 – Groundwater Analysis
    • Comparison of results applying varying groundwater conditions (e.g. water table with varying Hu coefficients, slope with drainage holes)
    • Applying transient analysis to determine change in Factor of Safety over time with varying groundwater conditions
  • Module 5 – Validation of 2D LE results
    • Validation of Slide2 model with RS2 – importance of Shear Strength Reduction comparison
    • RS2 Model Set up
