How Fast, How Far, How Deep? Runout Analysis for Everyday Engineering

Introducing RSRunout – three engines, GPU speed, one practical workflow

Description

What happens after a slope fails? How fast does the mass move, how far does it travel, what lies in its path, and where does it finally come to rest? Stability analysis tells you whether a failure can occur. Runout analysis tells you what happens after failure.

Join us for the first public look at RSRunout, Rocscience's new physics-based software for 3D runout analysis. We developed it to take post-failure modelling into routine engineering practice.

Until now, engineers have faced an uncomfortable choice. Established runout codes typically commit to a single numerical approach, assume depth-averaged, flow-like behaviour, and demand considerable expertise to set up, calibrate and interpret. The newer particle-based solvers that can capture large deformations and complex 3D behaviour have largely remained research tools, with interfaces that are not user-friendly and run times measured in hours or days.

RSRunout takes a different path. Three complementary computational engines, SPH, MPM and iBlocks, sit inside one streamlined interface. You can choose the physics that fits the problem: flow-like debris and tailings movement, large-deformation soil and rock behaviour, or discrete block motion. Or you can run more than one engine on the same model and see how sensitive your predictions are to the method itself, an insight single-engine tools cannot provide.

Through live examples, you will see how RSRunout:

  • Takes a failure scenario from set-up through computation to clear, interpretable results
  • Answers the questions that matter for hazard and design: velocity, runout extent, deposit depth, bed erosion and the final ground surface
  • Lets you compare SPH, MPM and iBlocks on any problem
  • Supports calibration against observed events
  • Delivers results in minutes rather than hours, so that runout becomes conventional analysis and not a one-off specialist study

If runout analysis has always seemed too specialized, too slow or too cumbersome for everyday use, this webinar will show you what a modern approach looks like.

Who should attend

Geotechnical and mining engineers, engineering geologists, tailings and dam-safety specialists, natural-hazard and risk consultants, and researchers who want a faster, more flexible alternative to existing runout tools. No prior experience with SPH, MPM or discrete-block methods is required.

What you will learn

  • Why runout analysis matters, and where it fits alongside limit-equilibrium and stress-deformation stability analysis
  • How GPU acceleration changes the scale and resolution of problems you can run
  • How to read and communicate runout outputs: velocity, extent, depth, erosion and final surface
  • How to calibrate against observed events
