Getting Started with Dips

Dips is a program designed for the interactive analysis of orientation based geological data. The program is a tool kit capable of many different applications and is designed both for the novice or occasional user, and for the accomplished user of stereographic projection who wishes to utilise more advanced tools in the analysis of geological data.

To familiarize yourself with the program:

  • See Dips Overview for an overview of the program and analysis assumptions.

  • Go to Dips Tutorials Overview and complete Tutorial 01 - Quick Start Tutorial and other tutorials. This provides an introduction to the major plotting features of Dips. Other tutorials provide guidance for more specific analysis features of Dips (e.g., Kinematic Analysis, joint spacing). It is recommended that you go through as many of the tutorials as possible. This is the best way to get acquainted with the many different capabilities of Dips.
