About Dr. Hoek

Dr. Evert Hoek is a household name in the field of rock mechanics. With over six decades of experience in the field of rock mechanics, he is widely known for his expertise in rock mass, tunneling and most notably his work to develop the Hoek-Brown failure criterion.

Dr. Hoek graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Cape Town and began his research career in 1958. His degrees include a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town and a D.Sc. (Eng.) from the University of London. He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Waterloo and Toronto in Canada and the Manresa School of Engineering (EPSEM) at Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain.

Throughout his career, he has published over 100 papers, given keynote addresses at conferences around the world and compiled a collection of case studies into Dr. Hoek’s Practical Rock Engineering- a reference book for engineers working with rock. As a teacher and a mentor, he has laid the foundation for those working in the field of rock mechanics.
