On March 6, 2019, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – Barcelona Tech (UPC) conferred an honorary doctoral degree on world-renowned engineer and rock mechanics expert Dr. Evert Hoek. The degree was awarded by the university’s Manresa School of Engineering (EPSEM) to mark the celebration of its 75th anniversary.

Among his many life-long accomplishments and contributions to the field of rock engineering worldwide, Dr. Hoek is acknowledged for having trained an entire generation of engineers who revolutionized rock mechanics. Dr. Hoek worked closely with Rocscience founder and CEO, Dr. John Curran, and monitored the development in its early stages of Rocscience’s geotechnical software, which is based on the concepts of rock mechanics that he himself created. The suite of products is highly respected by both the industry and academia and, in fact, the Rocscience Academic Bundle of the software is used by numerous engineering schools throughout the world, including EPSEM.

During the course of the evening, Dr. Hoek presented a prize to Moisés Muñoz, a student completing a dual master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering and Mine Engineering at EPSEM, consisting of attendance at a future Rocscience course sponsored by Rocscience.

The International Tunneling Association has also recognized Dr. Hoek’s exemplary contribution to the field of rock engineering and awarded him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2018.

Dr. Hoek is a long-time colleague and friend of Rocscience, and we honour this esteemed relationship by hosting Hoek’s Corner on our website, a reference library of rock engineering that includes his books and published research papers as well as a video lecture series recorded exclusively by Rocscience. This library is a major source of Dr. Hoek’s continuing consulting activities in the field.

We congratulate Dr. Hoek on the receipt of this well-earned degree and the Lifetime Achievement Award and again acknowledge his outstanding contribution to the field of engineering and rock mechanics worldwide.
