Import from Dips

If you are performing a Probabilistic analysis with SWedge, the Joint and/or Tension Crack mean orientations and statistical joint set information, can be imported from a Dips file.

Dips is a program for the graphical and statistical analysis of orientation data using stereonets, available from Rocscience - click here for more information.

To import statistical orientation information from a Dips file for an SWedge Probabilistic analysis:

  1. Select Input Data and select the Joint1, Joint2, Tension Crack or Basal Joint tab.
  2. Select Orientation Definition Method = Fisher Distribution.
  3. Select the Import from Dips button.
  4. You will see an Open file dialog. Navigate to the desired folder and open the desired Dips file. You may choose from:
    • Dips .dwp files (created by Dips version 5)
    • Dips .dipsvs files (created by Dips version 6 and later)
    *.dwp and *.dipsvs files are auxiliary data files generated by the Dips program. They are used to store joint set information and other data.
  5. You will see an Import dialog, which provides a preview of all joint sets contained in the Dips file.
  6. Select the Data Type (Weighted or Unweighted), if applicable. This refers to the Terzaghi weighting which can be used to account for bias correction in joint orientation measurements (see the Dips documentation for information about bias correction weighting).
  7. Select the desired joint set in the dialog and select OK. The mean orientation and Fisher K value will be automatically imported into the Probabilistic Input Data dialog.
  8. Repeat the above steps as required to import joint statistics for other SWedge joint planes.
