Analysis Data

The current analysis data that you are viewing is indicated in the toolbar at the top of the screen, and in the Contour Legend in the sidebar.

To change the results which are displayed, select the data type that you wish to view from the drop-list in the toolbar.

NOTE: the analysis output variables which can be plotted depend on the type of analysis you are performing. For example: pore water pressure, excess pore water pressure, effective stress, secondary settlement will not appear in the list of output variables, if you are not modeling groundwater or time-dependent settlement.

A brief description of the analysis output parameters is given below. For further information see the Settle3 Theory document.

  • Total Settlement - the sum of all settlement components (immediate + primary + secondary)
  • Total Consolidation Settlement - primary consolidation due to dissipation of excess pore pressure (total consolidation settlement = virgin consolidation settlement + recompression consolidation settlement)
  • Virgin Consolidation Settlement - virgin consolidation settlement due to dissipation of excess pore pressure
  • Recompression Consolidation Settlement - recompression consolidation settlement due to dissipation of excess pore pressure
  • Immediate Settlement - immediate (undrained) settlement
  • Secondary Settlement - time-dependent settlement due to creep
  • Hydroconsolidation Settlement - soil collapse due to increase in moisture content
  • Loading Stress ZZ - vertical stress due to loading
  • Effective Stress ZZ - total stress minus pore pressure
  • Total Stress ZZ - total stress due to gravity, pore pressure and loading
  • Modulus of Subgrade Reaction - ratio of the total applied structural load to the total resulting settlement (see Modulus of Subgrade Reaction topic for more details)
  • Total Strain - the total vertical strain including all strain components (immediate + primary + secondary)
  • Void Ratio - volume of voids divided by volume of solids
  • Pore Water Pressure - total pore water pressure including excess pore pressure
  • Excess Pore Water Pressure - excess pore pressure induced by loading
  • Degree of Consolidation - primary consolidation as a percentage of the ultimate (final) consolidation
  • Average Degree of Consolidation - degree of consolidation based on excess pore water pressure
  • Over-consolidation Ratio - highest stress experienced by the soil divided by the current stress
  • Pre-consolidation Stress - maximum vertical stress that a soil has experienced in the past
  • Coefficient of Consolidation - rate at which consolidation occurs (Cv value used), permeability coefficient divided by compressibility coefficient
  • Permeability - rate of flow of liquid through the soil
  • Undrained Shear Strength - undrained shear strength based on Shansep
