Add Bolt to Surface

Bolts can be added as individual (single) bolts or bolt patterns to selected faces of external volume pieces.

To add bolts as a bolt pattern to a selected face:

  1. Select the Support Support workflow tab workflow tab.
  2. Select Faces Selection Faces Selection icon as the Selection Mode.
  3. Select the face on which to add the bolt pattern.
  4. Select Add Bolts to Surface from the toolbar or the Bolts Bolts icon sub-menu of the Support menu.
  5. TIP: If you want to apply different variation of bolt pattern with shapes & orientation, it is recommended to use Add Bolts feature. Refer to 'Add Bolts' in Online Help for more information.

  6. You will see the Add Bolts dialog. In this dialog:
    • select the Bolt Property type.
    • select the bolt Orientation (e.g. Normal, Trend & Plunge, or Vector).
    • enter the Length of the bolt to be used in the bolt pattern.
    • in a multi-stage mode, the Staging options allow you to specify the stage at which the bolt(s) will be installed and the stage at which the bolt(s) will be removed. In addition, it can be selected to automatically remove bolt(s) in excavated material using the available option.
    • select Application = Bolt Pattern.

See below for details about the property, orientation, length, staging, application, and bolt pattern.

  1. Under Bolt Pattern, select the Primary Path (Required) Start text box. In the view window, use left click on the mouse to select the beginning of the primary path. Use left click on the mouse to select the end of the primary path. These start and end points of the primary path will determine the range in which bolts of the bolt pattern will be added in this primary direction.
  2. Select the Set Secondary Path (optional) start text box. In the view window, use left click on the mouse to select the beginning of the secondary path. Use left click on the mouse to select the end of the secondary path. These start and end points of the secondary path will determine the range in which bolts of the bolt pattern will be added in this secondary direction.
  3. Enter the Primary Spacing, Secondary Spacing, Primary Offset, and Secondary Offset for the bolt pattern.
  4. When all of the parameters for the bolt pattern have been entered, select the Preview Pattern Preview Pattern button button. Each bolt of the pattern is represented as a square on the surface of the selected face.
  5. When the pattern appears as desired, select the Add Add button button.
  6. When all Bolts have been added to the selected face, select Done to complete and close the dialog.

Bolt Property

You can select a Bolt Property type in the Add Bolts dialog. If you wish to edit the bolt properties you can use the Edit Bolt Property Edit Bolt Property icon shortcut button beside the bolt property type list.

Bolt Orientation

The Orientation may be specified using one of the following options:

  • Normal - Bolts are applied normal to the boundaries
  • Trend/Plunge - specify a trend and plunge
  • Vector (x,y,z) - specify a vector from the x, y, and z-directions

Flip Orientation

NOTE: after adding a bolt, the orientation may sometimes be opposite from the intended direction (i.e. 180 degrees off). If this occurs, you can select the bolt and use the Properties pane option to "flip" (i.e. reverse) the load orientation by 180 degrees. (Only applicable for 'Normal' orientation.)

Bolt Length

The length of all bolts as measured along the axis of the bolt.

Staging

If your model is staged, you can specify the installation and removal stage of bolts.

  • Install at stage - by default the installation stage will be set to the stage that you are currently viewing (i.e. the currently selected stage tab). You can enter a different stage if necessary.
  • Remove at stage - by default the removal stage will be set to never. You can enter the stage at which the Bolts are to be removed (uninstalled), if applicable.

AUTO-REMOVE IN EXCAVATED MATERIAL

The bolts can be automatically removed in excavated materials if the Auto-remove in excavated material checkbox is selected.

Bolt Application and Bolt Pattern

In RS3, bolts can be added as Single Bolt or Bolt Pattern. The Bolt Pattern option allows the user to define a region (on the selected face) on which a pattern of bolts will be added. This region is defined by the Primary Path and the Secondary Path. The start points selected for both the primary and secondary paths should be the same.

PRIMARY PATH

The Primary Path is the primary direction of the bolt pattern.

SECONDARY PATH

The Secondary Path is the secondary direction of the bolt pattern.

PRIMARY SPACING

The Primary Spacing is the spacing between each bolt of the pattern in the primary direction.

SECONDARY SPACING

The Secondary Spacing is the spacing between each bolt of the pattern in the secondary direction.

PRIMARY OFFSET

The Primary Offset allows you to define a starting location for the pattern in the primary direction, as measured from the starting point of the Primary Path.

SECONDARY OFFSET

The Secondary Offset allows you to define a starting location for the pattern in the secondary direction, as measured from the starting point of the Secondary Path.

Preview Pattern

The Preview Pattern Preview Pattern button button displays the pattern of the currently-configured bolt pattern on selected surface of the model.
