Viewing Options

Unwedge provides numerous viewing and display options for the 3-dimensional visualization of underground wedge problems.

The main viewing screen is referred to as the 3D Wedge View. This provides a 4-view split-screen format of the excavation, wedges and support, including 3 orthogonal views (Top, Front, Side) and a Perspective view. The model is displayed using advanced shading and transparency algorithms.

Any individual pane within the 3D Wedge View can be maximized by double-clicking the mouse in the desired pane. To restore the 4-view display, double click again in the maximized view. Alternatively, the horizontal and vertical dividers between the panes can be dragged to re-size the views.

View Options: Multi Perspective View

An alternative to the 3D Wedge view is the Multi Perspective view, which displays each wedge in its own individual perspective view. The orthogonal views are not displayed in the Multi Perspective view.

View Options: End Wedge View

An End Wedge View is also available, which only displays the two End Wedges, in separate perspective views.

View Options: Wedge Visibility

By default, all wedges are initially visible in the 3D Wedge View. However, you can choose to view any individual wedge or combination of wedges with the Wedge Visibility option, available in the Sidebar. You may choose to display:

  • Perimeter Wedges only
  • End Wedges only
  • Any individual wedge
  • Only wedges with a Factor of Safety less than the Design Factor of Safety
  • Any user defined combination of wedges

    View Options: Move wedges

In the 3-dimensional views, the wedges can be moved from their default positions around the excavation boundary. The wedges can be moved into or away from the excavation, and the direction of movement is determined by the sliding direction for each wedge.

The wedges can be moved simply by clicking and dragging with the mouse. Wedges can be moved individually or all together by holding down the Shift key. You may also use the Wedge Translation control in the sidebar to move all wedges. The wedges can be reset to their default positions at the click of the mouse.

    View Options: Rotate

The Perspective view of the model can be rotated for viewing at any angle simply by clicking the left mouse button in the view and dragging. As you move the mouse, the viewing angle of the excavation will follow the mouse movement.

    View Options: Zoom and Pan

Zooming and panning are available for both 2D and 3D views.

  • You may zoom in or out on any individual viewing pane, or all panes
simultaneously, using the zoom options in the toolbar or through
keyboard / mouse shortcuts (e.g. rotating the mouse wheel forward
or backward will zoom in or out, as will the F4 / F5 function keys).
  • The Pan option allows you to shift the model left, right, up or down
         within the view.

    View Options: Animation

Unwedge even has an “Animation” option, which allows you to automatically animate:
  • the rotation of the model AND / OR
  • the movement of the wedges
The speed of the rotation / wedge movement can be adjusted by the user.

      Display Options

Numerous display options are available through the Display Options dialog, which allow you to customize virtually every aspect of the 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional views of the model (excavation, wedges and support).

The user is encouraged to experiment with the Display Options, to become familiar with the many possibilities. Any display options which you select can easily be saved as the program default settings, if desired, by selecting the Defaults button in the Display Options dialog.

Excavation and wedge colours can be user defined.

    Excavation transparency – 100%, 60%, 30%.

Some of the most commonly used Display Options are also available through the right-click – if you right-click directly on model entities (wedges, tunnel, support), popup menus will present shortcuts to these options, as shown in the following figure.
