Groundwater

Groundwater pore pressure modeling in Settle3D allows you to model a water table, and horizontal and vertical drainage conditions as described below.

  • Water Table
  • Interlayer Drainage
  • Wick Drains

  • If you are modeling time-dependent consolidation, then you must define the groundwater conditions, because the modeling of pore pressure is essential for time-dependent consolidation analysis.

    Groundwater: Water Table

    In-situ groundwater pore pressure is defined by selecting the Groundwater checkbox in Project Settings, and entering the depth of the water table. The water table is assumed to be horizontal.

    For a multi-stage model, the depth of the water table can be changed at different stages, by selecting the Depth varies with stage checkbox, and entering the depth at each stage.

    Groundwater: Interlayer Drainage

    If your analysis includes groundwater then you can define the horizontal drainage condition at the bottom of each soil layer.

    For each layer, a Drained at Bottom checkbox can be selected in the Soil Layers dialog. If this checkbox is selected, then the layer is assumed to be drained at the bottom (i.e. excess pore pressure is automatically set to zero at the interface between layers).

    Groundwater: Wick Drains

    If your analysis includes groundwater, a region of vertical wick drains can be defined with the Add Wick Drain Region option. Wick drains will accelerate the process of soil consolidation. The properties of a wick drain region are entered in the following dialog.

    The area of a wick drain region is a user-defined polygon in the Plan View. In the following figure, a rectangular wick drain region has been defined around a rectangular load. A pattern of dots represents the spacing and pattern type of the wick drains.

    The wick drains can also be displayed in the 3D view as shown in the following figure.

    If wick drains are defined then you can specify the ratio of horizontal to vertical flow for each material, using the following dialog, accessible from the Soil Properties dialog.
