RocProp Properties Database

RocData now includes RocProp , a database of intact rock properties which runs as a standalone application. RocProp contains over 700 test records from worldwide sources, including compressive strength, tensile strength, elastic properties, Hoek parameters and velocity parameters. The database can be searched and filtered in various ways, and allows users to add their own data to the database. The main features of RocProp are as follows:

  • Primary Database
  • Searching Records
  • Viewing Records
  • Charting and Statistics
  • User Database
  • Export to Excel

  • RocProp: Primary Database

The primary RocProp database currently consists of over 700 records. For each record, the information includes:

  • Basic information such as rock type, country, location (latitude and
longitude), unit weight, feature name etc.
  • Reference information (the data source)
  • The actual test data is divided into four categories: compressive data,
tensile data, Hoek data and velocity data. Each record will contain data from
one or more of these categories. The available data is shown in the
         following figures.

  • Compressive Data

    Tensile Data

    Hoek Data

    Velocity Data

Rocscience intends to periodically update and expand the primary RocProp database, as new data becomes available. Database updates will be posted on the Rocscience website.

    RocProp: Searching Records

The RocProp database can be searched according to the following information:

  • Country, feature name, rock type, notes
  • Type of test data (compression, tensile, Hoek, velocity)
  • Geographical location (latitude, longitude and search radius)

  • The search words are typed into the edit box at the top of the sidebar, and standard searching features are implemented. For example:

  • Single or multiple search words can be entered
  • Wildcards (* character) can be used to match partial words (e.g. gran*
         to find granite, granodiorite, etc).
  • Double quotes can be used to search for exact phrases of multiple words
  • If multiple words are entered, you can search for records with ALL of
the words or ANY of the words

  • The search options are found in the RocProp sidebar, as shown in the following figure. To carry out a search, select the Search button and all records matching your search requirements will be displayed in the Search Results view at the right of the screen.

    RocProp search options

To search by geographical coordinates, select the Limit Search to Area checkbox, and enter latitude, longitude and search radius. This will return only records within the specified search radius (note: the Country search checkbox is disabled if you use this option).

    RocProp: Viewing Records

After a search has been carried out, the results can be easily viewed by clicking on the desired record on the Search Results screen. Multiple pages of results can be easily browsed by selecting a page number or the back/forward browse buttons. When you select a record for viewing, RocProp will display the information in the Record View, as shown below.

    RocProp Record View

You can easily switch between the Search Results view and the Record View by selecting the desired toolbar button.

    RocProp: Charting and Statistics

After a search has been carried out, you can easily create a histogram chart of any available data. Select the Chart View option, and then select the type of data you would like to plot. Select OK and the histogram will be immediately generated.

When a chart is created, statistical information for the data is automatically calculated and displayed in the Chart View. This includes the mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, total number of samples, and the best-fit statistical distribution (e.g. normal, lognormal, uniform, triangular, beta, exponential).

To change the currently plotted data type, simply select the Chart View option again, and you can change the data type, or customize the chart display options (e.g. axis titles, colours, 3D viewing option, show or hide the best-fit distribution and statistical information, etc).

    RocProp: User Database

In addition to the primary RocProp database, the user can create their own database of properties, which is independent of the primary database. To enter new data, select the Create New Record option, and you will see the following dialog, which allows you to enter information for a new, user-defined record.

Entry, editing and deleting of records is restricted to the User Database in RocProp. The primary RocProp database cannot be added to or edited by the user. However, you will be able to search BOTH the primary and user databases simultaneously.

    RocProp: Export to Excel

RocProp search results and charts can be easily exported to Excel with a few mouse clicks. Just select the Export to Excel option from the toolbar or File menu, and the selected data or chart will be exported to Excel, allowing you to perform more advanced data analysis if desired.
