Modeling
Examine2D offers state of the art interactive input and editing, allowing you to create a model and view results with a few mouse clicks. Analysis results are automatically displayed and updated in real time as the model boundaries or input parameters are changed.

Modeling: Boundaries
Examine2D provides powerful CAD based modeling features for defining the model geometry. Boundaries can be defined by:
 |
drawing with the mouse
entering coordinates in the prompt line
entering coordinates in a spreadsheet dialog
importing from a DXF file or other file types
|
Graphical entry of excavation boundary

Features such as grids, snapping, and undo are implemented, and arcs and circles can be easily created. Most options are available through right-click shortcuts. For example, the following figure shows the right-click options available while you are entering an excavation boundary.

Modeling: Boundary Types
Two types of boundaries can be defined in Examine2D:
Excavation boundaries are used to define underground excavations. For surface or near-surface excavations, a ground surface boundary can be used to define the ground surface.

If your model uses a ground surface boundary, then in most cases you will use the Gravitational Field Stress option to define the in situ stress.

Modeling: Interactive Editing
Interactive editing features make it extremely easy to edit the model geometry. Boundaries can be moved, deleted, copied, stretched, and convenient right-click shortcuts simplify editing even further. For example, if you right click on an excavation boundary, you will see the popup menu shown below.
Right click menu options for excavation boundary

If you right click on an individual vertex, you will see the following options. Note the various options for defining a move, including relative coordinates, or by defining a distance and angle.

Boundary coordinates can also be edited or entered through the coordinate table dialog. You can access the dialog by right-clicking on an existing boundary. You can also import coordinates into this dialog, by using Copy/Paste, or by selecting Import and importing a comma, tab or space-delimited text file.

A unique feature of Examine2D is the real time stress analysis capability, which allows you to make changes to the model, and in real-time, visualize the analysis results. For example, you can interactively change the shape or position of an excavation, and the contours will be immediately updated as the boundary is moved.
See the Real Time Analysis page for more information.

Modeling: Sidebar
The Sidebar in Examine2D is the vertical panel at the right side of the application window, which allows you to enter and interactively modify input data. The Sidebar input data includes:
When data is modified in the Sidebar the Examine2D analysis is automatically re-computed and the latest results are displayed on the screen.

Modeling: Show Coordinates
The coordinates of all model vertices can be displayed on the model by selecting the Show All Boundary Coordinates checkbox in the Display Options dialog.

Model coordinates can also be displayed as a Data Tip. If you set the Data Tips option to either Min or Max, coordinates will be displayed when you hover the mouse cursor over a vertex.

Model coordinates are also listed in the Info Viewer which allows you to easily print out a summary of all model input data.

Modeling: DXF Import / Export
Boundaries (and stress grid) can be imported into Examine2D from a DXF file with the Import DXF option. You can select which entities you would like to import, using the checkboxes provided.
