At Work The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is the national body in Canada that strategically invests in the country’s scientific and technological capabilities. To stimulate student interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering, and to encourage graduate studies and research careers, NSERC offers Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA). Vainatey Kulkarni, now entering his 3rd year as an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, won one of these awards to work at Rocscience this past summer. Vainatey started his summer term at Rocscience after completing two years in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto. At Rocscience, he was involved in a variety of projects, such as a study of current mesh generation technology and algorithms and their effectiveness in meshing complex geotechnical geometries. He also tested some solid modeling programs for their capabilities in geotechnical applications. Vainatey also wrote some consolidation and settlement programs for verifying and testing the Settle3D software. In the fall, Vainatey will now be continuing his studies in Mechanical Engineering in his third year. He will also be pursuing his interest in Aeronautics through his leadership in the University of Toronto Aeronautics Team. |
