Example Files

Various example files are installed with the Dips program. They demonstrate the wide range of problems that can be analyzed with Dips. The example files can be accessed by selecting File > Recent Folders > Examples Folder from the Dips main menu.

These sample data files are intended for use in training and education only. They should not be used as data sets for research.

EXAMPLE.DIPS8

This useful example file contains only 40 data entries, and is a good starting point for demonstrations of Dips features. The file includes traverses, mixed orientation formats (using traverses), oriented core data, quantity column, extra columns, and declination. This file is used in Tutorial 01 - Quick Start, Tutorial 02 - Creating a Dips File, Tutorial 03 - Sets (Set Window), Tutorial 04 - Sets (Set Window Freehand), Tutorial 05 - Sets (Sets from Cluster Analysis), and Tutorial 06 - Planes.

EXAMPLESET.DIPS8

This useful example file contains only 40 data entries (same as Example.dips8), and is a good starting point for demonstrations of Dips features. The file includes traverses, mixed orientation formats (using traverses), quantity column, extra columns, and declination (same as Example.dips8). This file includes two Set Windows. This file is used in Tutorial 14 - Data Queries and Filters, and Tutorial 15 - Stereonet Plot View Templates.

EXAMPMIN.DIPS8

This file contains 195 data points and illustrates the minimum column and header configuration for a Dips file – no traverses, orientation columns only, no extra columns or quantity column. Use this as a guide for plotting orientations only.

EXAMPPIT.DIPS8

This file contains structural data from an open pit mine. It includes a Planar Traverse for bias correction (weighted Contour Plot), and has Extra Columns for discontinuity spacing, length, type, shape and surface. This file is used in Tutorial 08 - Kinematic Analysis (Flexural Toppling), Tutorial 09 - Kinematic Analysis (Planar Sliding), and Tutorial 10 - Kinematic Analysis (Wedge Sliding).

EXAMPROS.DIPS8

This file contains data from an underground mine haulage tunnel and stope access drifts. There are five linear (tunnel) traverses and a total of 215 measurements. This file is ideal for illustrating the use of the Rosette Plot in Dips.

EXAMPCAV.DIPS8

This file contains 324 joint measurements (orientations only) measured in the backs (roofs) of pilot excavations for a power cavern.

EXAMPFLD.DIPS8

This file contains 175 data points collected at a road cut. The data defines a series of joints and bedding which have been folded, and is a good example file for demonstrating the Fold Analysis option.

EXAMPBHQ.DIPS8

This file contains 650 measurements from 2 oriented borehole cores. In addition to relative borehole joint orientations, intact segment lengths and NGI JA and JR measurements are given. This file is used in Tutorial 11 - Oriented Core and Rock Mass Classification.

EXAMPSTR.DIPS8

This file contains principal stress data obtained from 20 CSIRO cells in an underground research cavern. This file is meant to illustrate alternative uses for Dips (other than joint data) and to illustrate the variation in magnitude and direction of stress data (use the Chart and Add Set Window options).

EXAMCLIN.DIPS8

This file illustrates the use of the Clinorule Traverse option in Dips.

CURVED BOREHOLE.DIPS8

This file demonstrates the input required for defining a Curved Borehole, using the Curved BH Oriented Core option and is used in Tutorial 13 - Curved Boreholes.

JOINT SPACING.DIPS8

This file is used to demonstrate the Joint Spacing, RQD Analysis and Joint Frequency options in Tutorial 12 - Joint Spacing, RQD, and Joint Frequency.

DYNAMIC FILTER.DIPS8

This file contains predefined data filters. The filters are used to visualize the stereonets, and charts, created from the analysis of a subset of data (the filtered data) obtained from the main grid data (unfiltered data). This file is meant to illustrate the different filter definitions that can be queried for in Dips to obtain results for subsets of data.

ORTHOGONAL SETS.DIPS8

This file uses Linear Borehole Televiewer traverses, Distance Column, XYZ Columns and Persistence Column to define the location and size of planar structures and is used in Tutorial 17 - Statistical Plots.
