Adding Bolts

Rock bolts are added to an Swedge model with the Add Bolt option. This allows the user to evaluate the number, location, length and capacity of bolts necessary to stabilize a wedge (i.e. achieve a required Safety Factor or Probability of Failure). To add a rock bolt:

1. Select Add Bolt from the toolbar or the Support menu.

2. Move the cursor into the Top, Front or Perspective views.

3. Notice that the cursor changes to an "arrow / rockbolt" icon.

4. As you move the cursor over the wedge, notice that the "rockbolt" and "arrow" now line up – this indicates that you may add the bolt to the wedge.

5. Click the LEFT mouse button at a point on the wedge where you want the bolt installed.

6. The bolt will initially be installed NORMAL to the face of the wedge on which you clicked (i.e. normal to the Slope or Upper Face).

7. The Bolt Properties dialog will appear on the screen, which allows you to modify the bolt orientation and other properties – see the Bolt Properties Dialog topic for details.

8. When the desired bolt properties have been entered, select OK.

9. If you are not happy with the location of the bolt, select Cancel to delete the bolt.

Note:

• Although the Side orthogonal view can be used for adding bolts, this is not recommended, as correct placement may be difficult or impossible. (If the Dip Directions of the Upper and Face Slope are the same it will NOT be possible to add bolts in the Side orthogonal view.)
