Remove Mesh and Discretization

To remove the finite element mesh and / or the discretization from the model, select Remove Mesh and Discretization from the toolbar or the Mesh menu.

• This will remove BOTH the mesh and the discretization of the boundaries.

• If the model has been discretized but not meshed, then Remove Mesh will remove the discretization.

When you use the Remove Mesh option, Phase2 will preserve most of the mesh settings (e.g. custom discretization) and mesh-dependent modeling entities, so that they will still exist when you re-mesh. However, not all options are saved. Also, if you edit boundaries after Remove Mesh, this will also affect the preservation of mesh and modeling entities.

The effect of Remove Mesh on various options is described below.

Saved after Remove Mesh

The following features will be saved if you select Remove Mesh (i.e. if you select Remove Mesh and then re-mesh without making any changes to the model). However, if you Remove Mesh and then start editing the model, in particular the boundaries, then modeling entities (e.g. support) or boundary conditions may be deleted or reset.

• Custom Discretization - Custom Discretization is saved (note: to reset Custom Discretization you must use the Reset Custom Discretization option).

• Bolts - bolts are not affected by Remove Mesh, since they can be added to a model with or without the mesh.

• Liners - liners will disappear when you select Remove Mesh, however they will be re-appear when you re-mesh. If you edit boundaries on which liners were added, the liners will NOT be preserved on edited boundaries, when you re-mesh.

• Loads - loads (distributed loads, line loads, springs, liner moments) will be preserved.

• Boundary conditions - boundary conditions (restraints and groundwater) will be preserved.

• Radial Mesh - if you are using the Radial mesh type, Remove Mesh will delete the External boundary when the mesh is reset, since this is integrated with the Radial mesh generation. The External boundary will re-appear when you re-mesh.

• Mesh Setup - Remove Mesh does not change any of the Mesh Setup options, these can only be changed through the Mesh Setup dialog.

• Advanced Discretization - will be preserved.

• Material Assignment - is not affected.

• Mapped Meshing - Mapped Meshing will disappear when you select Remove Mesh. However, since the discretization is preserved, if you re-mesh, and then select Automatic Mapped Mesh, the mapped mesh will be restored.

Not Saved after Remove Mesh

• Increase Discretization Density - if you have used the Increase Discretization Density option to customize the discretization, this will NOT be saved when you select Remove Mesh.

• Increase Element Density - if you have used the Increase Mesh Element Density option to refine the mesh element density, this will NOT be saved when you select Remove Mesh.

If you delete the mesh accidentally, remember that you can always use the Undo option to Undo any actions in Phase2.
