Examine2D > Getting Started
The following is a listing of the major additions, changes and enhancements which have been made in the upgrade of Examine2D from version 6 to version 7.
Note: for a list of changes and bug fixes since the initial release of Examine2D version 7, see the Examine2D version 7 Update History page.
DOS to Windows Conversion
Examine2D converted from DOS to a Windows program. Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP compatible
Greatly improved graphics, interface and viewing options
Modeling
Interactive editing of geometry and input parameters
Right-click editing shortcuts
Click and drag boundaries with mouse, or use arrow keys for controlled increments
Improved Snap options - grid/vertex/line/ortho/object snap
Sidebar input for field stress and material properties
Generalized Hoek-Brown strength criterion (replaces original HB and Modified HB) using mb, s, a or GSI, mi, D
Charts and tables for estimating intact strength, GSI, mi, D
New unit system options (metric and imperial)
Measure in situ vertical stress from ground surface boundary
Automatic discretization of model boundaries
Improved arc/circle options
Analysis Results
Automatic compute as soon as boundary, stress grid are defined
Real time contouring and stress analysis as geometry or input parameters are modified
Improved Query option replaces several options in version 6 (e.g. Add Line, Line Values, Add Series etc).
Query data can be plotted directly on the model
Query data is computed exactly at each point, not interpolated from grid data
Query boundary (automatically generate a query on a boundary)
Query boundary data derived directly from raw boundary element data
Queries automatically saved with file
Improved graphing options
Export data to Excel
Contour data now includes mean stress, deviatoric stress, signed (+/-) displacement, volumetric strain, max shear strain, sigxx, sigyy, tauxy
For plane strain, principal stresses are reported as sig1, sig3 (in-plane) and sigZ (out-of-plane), rather than sig1, sig2, sig3.
Interactive contour legend
Customizable contour styles
Size of stress trajectories indicate relative magnitude of stresses
Failure trajectories for Hoek-Brown material
Export image files to .jpg, .bmp, .wmf, .emf or clipboard
Miscellaneous
Project Summary (in project settings)
Customizable Preferences
Customizable display options
Improved printing, customizable headers/footers
Customize number of decimal places for analysis output
Ruler display
Recently opened folders list
Complete plane strain orientation defined using angles instead of direction cosines
Default boundary condition (zero stress) does not need to be applied, it is automatically in effect
Examine2D files can be read into Phase2
Documentation
New help system, tutorial and verification examples
Features removed in version 7.0
Because Examine2D version 7.0 is designed to be a simple to use educational tool, and is now a freeware program, certain advanced features of Examine2D version 6.0 are no longer available in Examine2D 7.0. For example:
Joints (displacement discontinuities)
Multi-elevation gravitational field stress
User-defined contour data
NETDISP utility
are not available in Examine2D version 7.0 If your analysis requires the use of these features, then it is recommended that you use the finite element program Phase2, which is an advanced program for the design, analysis and support of underground excavations.
