Failure Trajectories indicate the locations at which the induced elastic stresses exceed the strength envelope of the material, as defined by your strength criterion parameters.
To display Failure Trajectories, select the Failure Trajectories checkbox under the General tab of the Display Options dialog.
The trajectories are displayed at each grid point where overstress has occurred, and also indicate the potential failure mode of the material (shear or tension).
Shear failure is indicated by two intersecting lines. The orientation of the lines show the theoretical orientation of the shear failure planes, relative to the principal stress directions.
Tensile failure is indicated by a single line, displayed perpendicular to the direction of tensile failure.
